HIRING

FAIR CHANCE HIRING
Would This Work for Your Company?

So What Is Fair Chance Hiring Anyway?
Fair chance hiring refers to the practice of giving people with criminal records an equal opportunity to compete for jobs. It recognizes that individuals with criminal records often face significant barriers when seeking employment, even after they have served their time and paid their debt to society.

What It Isn’t
Fair chance hiring is not a law.  It does not mean that employers are required to hire individuals with criminal records. Rather, it means that these individuals should be given a fair opportunity to compete for jobs based on their qualifications, skills, and experience.

Why Should We Do This?
By adopting fair chance hiring practices, employers can help to reduce prison recidivism rates, promote social and economic equity, and build a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Additionally, fair chance hiring can benefit businesses by increasing the pool of qualified job candidates and reducing turnover and training costs.

IF YOUR ORGANIZATION IS COMMITTED TO
DIVERSITY EQUITY & INCLUSION
THEN THIS MIGHT BE AN OPTION

Committing to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Fair Chance Hiring is a practice that gives individuals with a criminal record an equal opportunity to obtain employment. This can be an important consideration for companies that want to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their hiring practices.

How Do We Put This In To Practice?
Having a Fair Chance hiring policy may include initiatives such as removing questions about criminal history from job applications, delaying background checks until later in the hiring process, and providing job training and support to individuals with criminal records.

Should We Have A Written Policy?
If your company is committed to promoting fair chance hiring, you may want to add a Fair Chance Hiring policy to your Employee Handbook outlining your commitment to this practice. Doing so can help ensure that all employees and job applicants understand your company’s stance on fair chance hiring and that they know what to expect during the hiring process.
